Payammal Sree Shathrugna Swamy Temple, nestled along the picturesque Irinjalakuda-Kodungallur route, stands as a significant shrine dedicated to Lord Shathrugna, one of the four brothers of Lord Rama, considered to be the reincarnation of the mighty Sudarshana Chakra, the divine disc held by Lord Vishnu. This temple holds a unique place among the Nalambalams, a group of four temples visited during the sacred Nalambalam Yatra. The temple's rich history, exquisite architecture, and spiritual significance attract devotees seeking solace and divine blessings.

Located about 6 km from Vellankallur, the temple is distinctively smaller in size compared to the other Nalambalams. In fact, the idol of Lord Shathrugna housed within the temple is the smallest among the four retrieved from the sea by fishermen. While the other three temples feature circular Sreekovils (sanctum sanctorum), the Payammal temple stands out with its rectangular-shaped Sreekovil.

The sanctum sanctorum, made of squarish granite, enshrines the divine idol of Lord Shathrugna. Though the original Panchaloha idol, crafted from five sacred metals, has been lost to time, the present granite idol exudes a rare kind of divinity that enchants the devotees. The temple's serene ambiance and aura of sanctity leave a lasting impression on all who visit, providing a sense of unique satisfaction and spiritual upliftment.

The temple follows a well-structured daily ritual of three main poojas - Usha pooja, Utcha pooja, and Athazha pooja - performed with utmost devotion by the dedicated priests. The temple opens for darshan at 5.30 am, and after the morning Utcha pooja, it closes its doors at 10.30 am. In the evening, the second session commences at 5.30 pm, during which Deeparadhana and Athazha pooja take place, and the temple closes at 7.30 pm. A special lamp, called Pinvilakku, is lit behind the idol of Lord Shathrugna inside the Sreekovil, dedicated to Sruthakeerthi, the wife of Lord Shathrugna. The temple's sub-deity is Lord Ganapathy, and a special Ganapathi homam is conducted by devotees as an offering of devotion.

Devotees seeking prosperity for their families often partake in Sudarsana Pushpajali, an offering made to the divine Sudarshana Chakra, believed to bestow blessings and protection. The temple festival, celebrated with grandeur and enthusiasm, spans five days and commences at the auspicious Pooyam star of the month of Kumbha. Additionally, the month of Karkkidaka is marked with festivities celebrating the Ramayana, filling the temple grounds with joy and gaiety.

The temple's history bears the scars of Tippu Sultan's invasion, during which it suffered severe damages. In a valiant effort to protect the sacred idol of Lord Shathrugna from Tipu's army, the temple priests concealed the Panchaloha idol in the temple pond located on the western side of the temple. Despite the adversities faced during that period, the resilient spirit of the local people prevailed, and they collectively rebuilt the temple, reinstating its festivals, poojas, and rituals.

Completing the Nalambalam Yatra, a spiritual pilgrimage involving visits to four temples, the journey concludes at Payammal Sree Shathrugna Swamy Temple. On their way to the Sathrugna temple, devotees often stop by the temple of Lord Krishna, named Elambalakkattu, situated at Edakkulam, further enhancing the spiritual experience of the pilgrimage.
