Overview.

Aruvithura Church, situated in the Pala Diocese of Kerala, holds a special place as one of the oldest churches in the region. According to tradition, it is believed that the Catholic Church at Aruvithura was established in AD 151, with a history dating back to the early days of Christianity in India. It is said that a group of Christians, baptized by St. Thomas the Apostle, settled in this area, forming the foundation of the church and its community. Over the years, Aruvithura Church has played a significant role in shaping the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Pala Diocese, serving as a spiritual center and fostering the growth of Christianity in the region.

Historically, the early churches in the Pala Diocese were predominantly dedicated to Martha Mariam (St. Mary). Aruvithura Church also initially bore this dedication until the 13th century. The presence of a statue of St. Mary at the center of the main altar serves as evidence of this early devotion. However, during the 13th century, a group of Christians fleeing from Nilackal, seeking refuge from persecution, brought a statue of St. George to Aruvithura Church for veneration. From that point forward, the church became known by the name of St. George. The people of Aruvithura, seeking the intercession of St. George, experienced numerous blessings and miracles, establishing a deep connection with the saint. Over time, St. George of Aruvithura came to be affectionately known as "Aruvithura Valliachen" by the local community.

The original statue of St. George brought from Nilackal is still preserved in Aruvithura Church. Remarkably, the statue has remained untouched since the 13th century, with no repainting or modifications. During the festival season, the statue is brought forward from the altar and placed for public veneration. An exceptional custom unique to this church is that only the Reverend Fathers are permitted to bring the statue forward from the altar and return it to its place, adding to the sacredness and reverence associated with St. George.

The present Aruvithura Church is the fourth church to be built at this location. Unfortunately, details about the first church are unavailable. The second church was constructed in the form of a temple, reflecting the architectural influences of the time. The third church followed a Portuguese model, showcasing the influences of Portuguese colonization. The altar from the third church is still preserved in the present-day church, serving as a link to the past. The current church was built in 1951 and boasts impressive dimensions, measuring 170 feet in length and 50 feet in breadth. The aerial view of the church resembles a cross, symbolizing the core beliefs of Christianity. The magnificent "Manimalika" standing in front of the church stands tall at 120 feet, while the statue of Christ atop the church measures 15 feet, adding to the grandeur and spiritual ambiance of the sacred site.
